Whale watchingThe annual migration of the humpback whale is happening right now until the end of October. There are a number of different tour companies – a number of them leave from the Gold Coast Spit. Alternatively you can head down to Byron for the day as there are a number of tours departing there regularly. Be sure to shop around as there are always deals on, and they offer a variety of experiences. Some will be more private on smaller vessels, others are on larger vessels and are full service with lunch provided, so you can choose an option that suits your family and budget best.

 

The Gold Coast is well known for its surfer lifestyle, so why not learn from some of the best and tick one more thing off your bucket list. surfingSurf lessons and board hire shops are located near almost every beach on the coast. It’s recommended that you book as the classes often fill up, especially as the weather heats up. The Gold Coast Eisteddfod was originally run in 1982. It was a part of Tropicarnival which was the coasts first festival. It is the largest competition of its kind in the country. Around 158 schools and over 70 dance studios take part competing in segments such as solo and group dance, piano, strings, brass and wind instrumental groups, orchestras, choral. Last year over 70,000 competitors took the stage over the seven weeks.gold coast eistedford

 

The competition is held at The Arts Centre and the Robina and Albert Waterways Community Centres. The eisteddfod runs from Friday the 28th of July – starting with the music events, and finishes on the 14th of September.

 

When most people think of the Gold Coast they think of the picture perfect beaches and the theme parks, but have you been to them all yet?

Swell Festival in Currumbin – Coolangatta Whale Watching – Best Markets in Burleigh/Gold Coast

                                                

There is so much to do on the Gold Coast, and there is no place better to make your home base than Burleigh Beach. With its own national parkland, stunning beaches and a thriving dining scene it’s the perfect place to stay. From there you can check out Swell Festival, go whale watching or head south to check out the Kingscliff Lantern Markets. However you want to spend your holiday, Burleigh is the perfect place to be.

 

If you are lucky enough to be visiting the Gold Coast between the 8th and the 17th of September you won’t want to miss Swell Festival in Currumbin. Celebrating its 15th year, this event showcases an impressive art collection, right on the beach. swell sculpturePlus there are a range of photography and art workshops, live music and yoga classes to take part in.

In the initial days of the festival you can vote for your favourite pieces, and you can visit at dusk or in the evening for a different experience (most pieces are lit and look spectacular at night).

 

Founded in 2003 Swell has grown drastically from its initial 23 sculptures, they now showcase work from over 55 artists, are visited by 265,000 people and have up to $1 million worth of art on show.

 

Whale watching season is here, and the Gold Coast is one of the best places to enjoy their annual migration. Whether you want to visit one of the local headlands and hope you catch a glimpse of these incredible creatures, or you want to get up close and personal on a charter boat – you won’t want to miss them.

 

The season starts mid May and ends in the first weeks of November. And the first whales are already making their way past. It can be difficult picking a company when there are so many options so make sure you find out what boat they use. Some are smaller and others are larger – the difference depends on whether you prefer an intimate setting or whether you want more facilities and space on board. The Kingscliff Night Markets (or the Kingscliff Lantern Markets as they are often called) are held on the first Friday of every month. kingscliff beachThey are located next to the Cudgen Surf Life Saving Club right along the beach and run from 5pm-9pm. With a range of food and drink stalls, fashion, art and crafts on display and live entertainment it’s a great night out for locals and visitors alike.

 

If you’re looking for a market closer to home, check out the Village Markets. Held on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month from 8:30am-1pm on the Burleigh Heads State School oval. These markets offer a range of live entertainment, boutique fashion and accessories, second hand stalls and a selection of incredible food choices.

Swell Sculpture Festival – Coolangatta Whale Watching – Gold Coast Multisport Festival

Burleigh Heads even stunning in WinterAs the weather starts to warm, the Gold Coast is truly one of the most beautiful places in Australia to visit. In addition to the gorgeous beachers, we are lucky enough to star as one of the best whale watching locations in the world. Plus there is always a wide range of events on; September features the Swell Sculpture Festival, or if you’re a sports fan you can’t miss the Gold Coast Multisport Festival in late August. Of course you also won’t want to miss our ever-popular theme parks, nightlife and dining precincts.

Held in conjunction with the existing Challenge Gold Coast event, this festival hosts a Supersprint Triathlon, a Kids Aquathon and a Twilight Fun Run.

Compete, or cheer on your favourite athlete, and with competitor numbers expected to exceed 2,500 – it’s guaranteed to be an exciting event! Swell Sculpture Festival Currumbin   –  September 11 to 20
Swell Sculpture Festival  Currumbin BeachIf you’re visiting the Gold Coast in September, make sure you’re around to visit the Swell Sculpture Festival held on Currumbin Beach from September 11 to 20. Experience an incredible display of over 50 sculptures from local, national and international artists. Held along the spectacular Currumbin coastline you can visit the art installations at all hours of the day – it’s highly recommended you visit at sunrise or sunset as the lighting adds to the wonder of the displays.  Some of the sculptures are even lit which adds to the nighttime experience!

In addition to the sculptures, you can also take part in adult or children’s workshops, vote in the art competition, enjoy the musical acts and even meet with some of the artists.  Enjoy a wonderful stroll along the beach while taking in the art, and if you have kids, you can let them play in the sand while you admire the sculptures.

A whale watching adventure we’ll never forget!

After checking into our lovely Gemini Court Burleigh Heads accommodation, my husband and I immediately gravitated to the balcony with its sweeping views from Burleigh Heads to Surfers Paradise.

But it wasn’t Surfers that caught our attention, just off Burleigh Headland we could see the distinct outline of two humpback whales putting on a great display.  There were quite a few people gathered on the headland but no-one had a better view than us from our wonderful Burleigh Heads holiday apartment balcony! A whale of a time!

Up early for our first adventure whale watching with Coolangatta Whale Watch.  It was a bright, clear winter’s day and we were all rugged up and ready to go when our ride arrived at Gemini Court Holiday Apartments.

We reached our boat and it’s all aboard! A short trip down the beautiful Tweed River and we were out in the ocean looking for whales.
