Barefoot bowls – Swell Festival – Gold Coast Summer Style

Swell Festival in Currumbin – Coolangatta Whale Watching – Best Markets in Burleigh/Gold Coast

                                                

There is so much to do on the Gold Coast, and there is no place better to make your home base than Burleigh Beach. With its own national parkland, stunning beaches and a thriving dining scene it’s the perfect place to stay. From there you can check out Swell Festival, go whale watching or head south to check out the Kingscliff Lantern Markets. However you want to spend your holiday, Burleigh is the perfect place to be.

 

If you are lucky enough to be visiting the Gold Coast between the 8th and the 17th of September you won’t want to miss Swell Festival in Currumbin. In the initial days of the festival you can vote for your favourite pieces, and you can visit at dusk or in the evening for a different experience (most pieces are lit and look spectacular at night).

 

Founded in 2003 Swell has grown drastically from its initial 23 sculptures, they now showcase work from over 55 artists, are visited by 265,000 people and have up to $1 million worth of art on show.

 

Whale watching season is here, and the Gold Coast is one of the best places to enjoy their annual migration. Whether you want to visit one of the local headlands and hope you catch a glimpse of these incredible creatures, or you want to get up close and personal on a charter boat – you won’t want to miss them.

 

The season starts mid May and ends in the first weeks of November. And the first whales are already making their way past. With a range of food and drink stalls, fashion, art and crafts on display and live entertainment it’s a great night out for locals and visitors alike.

 

If you’re looking for a market closer to home, check out the Village Markets. Held on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month from 8:30am-1pm on the Burleigh Heads State School oval. These markets offer a range of live entertainment, boutique fashion and accessories, second hand stalls and a selection of incredible food choices.

Olympic Success – Gold Coast 600 – Coolangatta Gold

Burleigh is one of the most popular Gold Coast destinations, for visitors and locals alike. Whether you want to wine and dine, laze on a beach, or go for a walk through nature. With events like the Coolangatta Gold, Saltfest and Swell Festival nearby, it’s the perfect place to stay!

 

Rio Olympic Success
We want to take a moment to celebrate the achievements of those local Gold Coasters who competed at the recent Rio Games. There were a number of Gold Coast athletes competing in the recent Rio Olympic Games – here is a list of their accomplishments.

Mat Belcher, with his team mate Will Ryan won silver in Sailing – Men’s 470 (dinghy), Ken Wallace, with his team mate Lachlan Tame won bronze in the K2 1000m (Kayak), Cameron McEvoy won two bronze medals in Swimming – Men’s 4 x 100m Medley Relay and Men’s 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay. Dani Samuels (Discuss), Emma Moffatt (Triathlon), Samantha Stosur (Tennis) and Thomas Fraser-Holmes (swimming) also competed and did the Gold Coast, and Australia proud with their efforts!

The Castrol Gold Coast 600 is a must see Gold Coast event, on the 21-23rd of October – however, you may not want to be surrounded by the excitement and atmosphere your entire trip, especially if you are looking for a more relaxing holiday. Staying at Gemini Court in Burleigh is an excellent choice; you’re close to the action – but far enough away to enjoy some peace and quiet.

 

While you’re checking out the action – be sure to watch the test races, as well as the main events! Soak up the atmosphere, watch one of the many music acts (The Living End, Birds of Tokyo, Peking Duck and The Rubens are all playing),

and when you’re done head back to the beautiful Burleigh Beach

for some R&R and some time on the beach.

For the sporting and surf life saving fans, why not check out the Coates Hire Coolangatta Gold – with most of the action taking place around Burleigh, you can view the action from your balcony. Depending on your room at Gemini Court you might be able to see the ski, swim, run or board section of the competition before they head back to Coolangatta for the finish line! This event is held on the 15th of 16th October, so if you’re in town on those dates – try and get a room with ocean views so you can watch the action!

 

 

 

Swell & Saltfest
This month the Gold Coast was host to the Swell Sculpture Festival on Currumbin Beach – It’s a series of incredible art installations on the beach, and Saltfest, which was a community event catering to surf lovers. With surfboard shapers, surf artists and photographers, yoga classes, food trucks, surf gear and apparel! Keep these two brilliant events in mind for your next Gold Coast adventure.

Swell Sculpture Festival Currumbin   –  September 11 to 20
Swell Sculpture Festival  Currumbin BeachIf you’re visiting the Gold Coast in September, make sure you’re around to visit the Swell Sculpture Festival held on Currumbin Beach from September 11 to 20. Experience an incredible display of over 50 sculptures from local, national and international artists. Held along the spectacular Currumbin coastline you can visit the art installations at all hours of the day – it’s highly recommended you visit at sunrise or sunset as the lighting adds to the wonder of the displays.  Some of the sculptures are even lit which adds to the nighttime experience!
