There is so much to do on the Gold Coast, and there is no place better to make your home base than Burleigh Beach. With its own national parkland, stunning beaches and a thriving dining scene it’s the perfect place to stay. From there you can check out Swell Festival, go whale watching or head south to check out the Kingscliff Lantern Markets. However you want to spend your holiday, Burleigh is the perfect place to be.
If you are lucky enough to be visiting the Gold Coast between the 8th and the 17th of September you won’t want to miss Swell Festival in Currumbin. Celebrating its 15th year, this event showcases an impressive art collection, right on the beach. Plus there are a range of photography and art workshops, live music and yoga classes to take part in.
In the initial days of the festival you can vote for your favourite pieces, and you can visit at dusk or in the evening for a different experience (most pieces are lit and look spectacular at night).
Founded in 2003 Swell has grown drastically from its initial 23 sculptures, they now showcase work from over 55 artists, are visited by 265,000 people and have up to $1 million worth of art on show.
Whale watching season is here, and the Gold Coast is one of the best places to enjoy their annual migration. Whether you want to visit one of the local headlands and hope you catch a glimpse of these incredible creatures, or you want to get up close and personal on a charter boat – you won’t want to miss them.
The season starts mid May and ends in the first weeks of November. And the first whales are already making their way past. A number of the local charter companies offer a sighting guarantee so you won’t miss out if it’s a quiet day. As a bonus you may be lucky enough to see additional marine life such as dolphins and turtles.
It can be difficult picking a company when there are so many options so make sure you find out what boat they use. Some are smaller and others are larger – the difference depends on whether you prefer an intimate setting or whether you want more facilities and space on board. Make sure you check in with reception as we often have specials running and can point you in the right direction depending on your preferences.
The Kingscliff Night Markets (or the Kingscliff Lantern Markets as they are often called) are held on the first Friday of every month. They are located next to the Cudgen Surf Life Saving Club right along the beach and run from 5pm-9pm. With a range of food and drink stalls, fashion, art and crafts on display and live entertainment it’s a great night out for locals and visitors alike.
If you’re looking for a market closer to home, check out the Village Markets. Held on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month from 8:30am-1pm on the Burleigh Heads State School oval. These markets offer a range of live entertainment, boutique fashion and accessories, second hand stalls and a selection of incredible food choices.
