Barefoot bowls – Swell Festival – Gold Coast Summer Style

Say you’re coming to visit and stay in Burleigh Heads, what do you know about the history of this beautiful spot?

It was originally observed by white settlers in 1770 when Sir Joseph Banks witnessed some Aboriginal activity on the headland while onboard the Endeavour. While the original inhabitants have called Burleigh home for at least 5,000 years as a tribe known as the Gombemberri Tribe or ‘The Salt Water People’. The headland was named Burly Head by surveyor J. R. Warner in 1840 because of the headlands large appearance and was later renamed Burleigh. For the local Aborigines Big Burleigh was Jellurgul and Little Burleigh was called Jebbribillum.

The iconic surf life savers began their first patrols in the summer of 1918/19 and Burleigh Heads Surf Lifesaving Club was officially established in 1921. Since those days it as become a popular coastline tourist destination and a favourite spot amongst locals.

There are a number of different tour companies – a number of them leave from the Gold Coast Spit. Alternatively you can head down to Byron for the day as there are a number of tours departing there regularly. Be sure to shop around as there are always deals on, and they offer a variety of experiences. Some will be more private on smaller vessels, others are on larger vessels and are full service with lunch provided, so you can choose an option that suits your family and budget best.

The Gold Coast Eisteddfod was originally run in 1982. It was a part of Tropicarnival which was the coasts first festival. It is the largest competition of its kind in the country. Around 158 schools and over 70 dance studios take part competing in segments such as solo and group dance, piano, strings, brass and wind instrumental groups, orchestras, choral. The competition is held at The Arts Centre and the Robina and Albert Waterways Community Centres. The eisteddfod runs from Friday the 28th of July – starting with the music events, and finishes on the 14th of September.

The Queensland Junior Titles is the second surfing event of the year for the Under 18 and Under 16 divisions. jnr surf titlesThis event is an important qualification for selection into the Queensland State Junior Surfing Team – so excitement and talent will be at their peak. This event is held on the 9th and 10th of September and could be held anywhere between The Southport Spit all the way down to Duranbah. You’ll need to call the event hotline on (07) 30303 6388 each morning to find the exact location as the location will move dependant on conditions.

 
If you’re looking for something different why not make the most of the Gold Coast waterways and estuaries and hire a boat or a BBQ pontoon boat? There are a number of vendors that hire boats, the closest being on the Tweed River. bbq pontoonIt makes for a wonderful day out cruising the water and will allow you to see a different side of the Gold Coast.

 
A BBQ pontoon boat is another excellent choice and you’ll create some wonderful memories cruising along, jumping in for a quick dip whenever you find a nice spot and BBQing to your hearts content.

 

For a cultural night out you can’t miss Opera on the Beach held between the 21st and 30th of September. Coolangatta Beach will be transformed into an Egyptian wonderland for a production of Aida. The story covers a royal love triangle and even our local surf life savers will be getting involved.

There is so much to do on the Gold Coast, and there is no place better to make your home base than Burleigh Beach. In the initial days of the festival you can vote for your favourite pieces, and you can visit at dusk or in the evening for a different experience (most pieces are lit and look spectacular at night).

Whale watching season is here, and the Gold Coast is one of the best places to enjoy their annual migration. If you’re looking for a market closer to home, check out the Village Markets. Held on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month from 8:30am-1pm on the Burleigh Heads State School oval. Parks in Burleigh – Broadbeach Music Events – Cooly Rocks On

Come and soak up some sunshine on the Gold Coast this winter. With music events, Cooly Rocks On, beautiful parks to explore and the big four theme parks, you’ll love soaking up the atmosphere and crystal clear days.

Burleigh Head National Park is one of the most popular, it has a beautiful lookout and a number of walks for a variety of fitness levels. Whether you want to go for a stroll through the forest, or you want challenge yourself a little with a more intense walk, this is the place to be. One of the highlights is the Tumgun Lookout, which has spectacular views of the coast. Although it takes a little more effort to get to the lookout, it’s easy enough for most if you go slow and steady – just note there are some stairs to get to the top.

 

Justin’s Park is another popular spot, it has a great playground for the kids, an open space area for kicking a ball around, and is next to some amazing shops if you want an ice cream or some fish and chips on the beach. burleigh headland walkPlus, on a Sunday night the bongos and flame throwers come out to play, so it’s worth hanging around to be a part of the atmosphere.

 

At the other end of the beach is the Mick Schamburg park which is on the boarder of Burleigh and Miami. Another spectacular lookout that gives you the full view of the Gold Coast coastline, with also has a smaller playground.

 

Plus, for all the fitness fans, dotted along the coastline between the National Park and the Mick Schamburg park are a selection of fitness stations. From chin up bars, to balance beams to leg press machines – this walk has it all. Or you can simply enjoy the sand between your toes and go for a stroll on the beach.

 

Broadbeach is well known for its music events. With two iconic events you won’t want to miss:

Blues on Broadbeach is held this month from the 18th-21st of May and will feature headline artists Bonnie Tyler, Ian Moss, the Slim Jim Phantom Trio and Harts.

blues on broadbeachThe Broadbeach Country Music Festival is held a little later in the year from the 28th-30th of July and features artists like Kasey Chambers, Troy Cassar-Daley and The Wolfe Brothers.

The best part of both these events is that they are completely free. The atmosphere is always amazing as the crowds gather to enjoy their favourite bands and artists. Whether you choose to dine in one of the restaurants and take in the atmosphere or grab an ice cream or coffee and stroll the streets taking it all in – you’ll have a wonderful weekend.

 

Cooly Rocks On is another popular Gold Coast event packed full of music, cars, dancing and old-fashioned fun. Plus, the daytime entertainment is completely free. Held on the 7th-11th of June in Coolangatta you can take part in the dance championships, cooly rocks on street dancingor enjoy a dance class, watch the street parade or admire the cars in the show ’n’ shine or cuddle up for the Drive in Movies – however you spend the event, you are destined to have a ball.

Countdown to Commonwealth Games – Sanctuary Cove Boat Show – Family group getaways

If you’re planning on heading to the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, it’s time to start getting organised. It may be a year away, but tickets and accomodation will book up quickly. The Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show is almost here. Held on the 25th-29th of May it’ll be open 9am-5pm daily. Whether you are already out on the water regularly or just want to dream and admire the luxury and fun, it’s the perfect day out for the whole family.

There are over 200 exhibitors on display showcasing luxury and super yachts, fishing equipment, boat builders and sellers, jetties, inflatables and every piece of marine equipment you would ever need – all in one place.

 

For the fishing fans there is even a Live Bream Shootout, where the winner takes all and the fish are released at the end. There is $3,000 up for grab for the team who catches the most in fish weight over the two days.

 

The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games are just over a year away, but tickets are already available and going fast. With the opening ceremony being held on the 4th of April and the closing ceremony on the 15th, it’s going to be an action packed 11 days. Over 6,600 International athletes are expected from 70 nations and territories so you know that tickets and accomodation options won’t last.

Bleach Festival – Fishing

Burleigh is known for its beautiful beach, iconic headland, and thriving restaurant and café scene. Plus, it’s close to the airport and just a short drive to other top tourist destinations. If you’re travelling towards the end of March, you’ll want to stick around for Bleach Festival – one of the best events the coast has to offer. Perhaps you’re looking for something more adventurous? If you saw the last post we shared, you would know that Bleach Festival 2017 is almost here. Held from the 31st of March to the 16th of April, you will not want to miss this unique event. With so much to offer from sports and theatre performances to music, circus and dance productions there is something you’ll love no matter your tastes.

You can expect an incredible line up featuring Sabor y Control, Benny D Williams and Slip on Stereo. You don’t want to miss the event that will help close Bleach Festival for 2017.

 

Benny D Williams will take the stage at 2:30, followed by Slip on Stereo at 3:30pm, with the final performance by Sabor y Control at 4:30. Watch the sun set, bring a picnic blanket, some munchies and enjoy the atmosphere.

Game Plan [In the zone] – April 1st, 6th, 7th, 8th, 13th, 14th and 15th at 11am held at The Walls Arts Space

 

This mix of sport and art explores being ‘in the zone’ – if you’ve ever been in the zone, you’ll know this feeling well. This exhibition takes this concept beyond the sport field it’s usually found in and transforms it into a unique experience.

 

If you’re curious, make sure you’re at the opening night party on Saturday 1st of April between 5-8pm.

Varsity Daze – March 31st, April 1st and 2nd at 6pm

 

This free art installation held in Varsity features three giant illuminated humanoids, wander around while listening to the sounds of The Ruiins, TH’FIKA and Austen. This event is designed to challenge our notion of scale. Not only is it beautiful from a design perspective, it will also get you thinking about our role in the environment.

Snake Sessions – April 7th and 8th at 5pm

 

Held within Pizzey Park Skate Park, Branch Nebula will showcase their unique street style for their Queensland premiere. A live drummer drives the performance with its mix of professional skaters, BMX riders, parkourists and dancers.  They will share incredible moves and tricks, with an improvised performance you won’t want to miss.

 

If you can’t make the show, they will have workshops and open rehearsals between the 4th-7th 11am-5pm that you can check out.

 

Deep Sea Fishing Adventures
Perhaps the arts, if you can limit to bleach festival to simply arts, aren’t for you – so why not see the Gold Coast from a different perspective and try your luck at a deep sea fishing adventure?

If you’ve never been, you definitely need to add the Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre to your ‘must visit’ list. You’ll learn about the Aboriginal history and culture specific to the Gold Coast, you’ll hear dreamtime stories from the area as well as learn about traditional bush foods, and life in the bush. There are also cultural workshops, dance performances, and daily tours.

You can also watch Aboriginal artists at work, purchase original artwork and see a range of artefacts. If you haven’t seen it already, there is nothing quite like watching the sunset from Burleigh Hill. A popular spot with locals, so be sure to get their mid afternoon to stake out a spot. Bring a picnic blanket and some snacks and enjoy a Gold Coast sunset, you’ll see the sun set over the ocean, skyline and mountains – it’s a wonderful sight to see.

The Gold Coast’s sunny shores will undergo a transformation early next year as the Australian Sand Sculpting Championships makes its annual, and much-anticipated, visit to the region. You can bet the kids will love this eccentric spectator sport, which continues to boom in popularity nationwide.

Sand Sculptures on the Gold CoastHeld from Friday, February 13 to Sunday, March 1, and located just a short drive from Gemini Court Holiday Apartments in Burleigh Heads, the hotly anticipated championships will scatter a trail from Robina Town Centre to Westfield Helensvale, alongside the main event at The Foreshore, Surfers Paradise.

This year’s Sand Safari will see the Surfers Paradise coastline fill with a dozen sculptures of some of the best loved Disney characters, plucked straight from films such as Cars, The Lion King, Finding Nemo, Frozen and other veritable classics, adored by children and adults alike. Ranging from a monstrous 10 to 25 tonne in weight, the sand creations are guaranteed to delight, whatever your age.

Sculptors from around Australia will be vying for the crown, so expect mind-blowing works of art created in a carefully calculated bid for the win.

The Sand Safari will also feature an interactive Disney display where you can a photo taken, as well as take part in interactive sand art and bottle workshops, which always prove popular.

You’ll be able to view the sculptors at work daily from 8am to 6pm from February 13 to March 1, as well as the build of the Disney Interactive Sculpture, held from 9.30am to 6pm daily from February 18 to 22. Nevertheless, all sculptures will remain open for viewing until March 1, giving an ample opportunity to check out the nifty works of precision and imagination.

Sand Sculptures on the GoldieTen mini sculptures will also be dotted around the Gold Coast for you to discover, with locations ranging from The Oasis Shopping Centre to Soul Boardwalk, Australia Fair and an array of other locations in between.

Following the championships, March will also herald the arrival of the annual Gold Coast Relay for Life, which always attracts strong support locally as a well-respected Cancer Council Fundraiser.

As a result, hundreds of thousands of dollars was raised for cancer research last year alone.
