Whale watchingThe annual migration of the humpback whale is happening right now until the end of October. There are a number of different tour companies – a number of them leave from the Gold Coast Spit. Alternatively you can head down to Byron for the day as there are a number of tours departing there regularly. Be sure to shop around as there are always deals on, and they offer a variety of experiences. Some will be more private on smaller vessels, others are on larger vessels and are full service with lunch provided, so you can choose an option that suits your family and budget best.

The Gold Coast Eisteddfod was originally run in 1982. It was a part of Tropicarnival which was the coasts first festival. It is the largest competition of its kind in the country. Around 158 schools and over 70 dance studios take part competing in segments such as solo and group dance, piano, strings, brass and wind instrumental groups, orchestras, choral. Last year over 70,000 competitors took the stage over the seven weeks.gold coast eistedford

 

The competition is held at The Arts Centre and the Robina and Albert Waterways Community Centres. The eisteddfod runs from Friday the 28th of July – starting with the music events, and finishes on the 14th of September.

 

When most people think of the Gold Coast they think of the picture perfect beaches and the theme parks, but have you been to them all yet?

Winter Escape – Queensland Junior Surfing Titles – Gold Coast from the waterways – Opera by the Beach

The Queensland Junior Titles is the second surfing event of the year for the Under 18 and Under 16 divisions. jnr surf titlesThis event is an important qualification for selection into the Queensland State Junior Surfing Team – so excitement and talent will be at their peak. This event is held on the 9th and 10th of September and could be held anywhere between The Southport Spit all the way down to Duranbah. You’ll need to call the event hotline on (07) 30303 6388 each morning to find the exact location as the location will move dependant on conditions.

 
If you’re looking for something different why not make the most of the Gold Coast waterways and estuaries and hire a boat or a BBQ pontoon boat? There are a number of vendors that hire boats, the closest being on the Tweed River. bbq pontoonIt makes for a wonderful day out cruising the water and will allow you to see a different side of the Gold Coast.

 
A BBQ pontoon boat is another excellent choice and you’ll create some wonderful memories cruising along, jumping in for a quick dip whenever you find a nice spot and BBQing to your hearts content.

 

For a cultural night out you can’t miss Opera on the Beach held between the 21st and 30th of September. Coolangatta Beach will be transformed into an Egyptian wonderland for a production of Aida. The story covers a royal love triangle and even our local surf life savers will be getting involved.

There are only 6 performances each starting at 6:30pm right on the beach. Prices start at $35 per person for C Reserve and if you want the best seats in the house, tickets are going for $90 each. You’ll want to be quick to make sure you get a good spot.

 
This month the Gold Coast is lucky enough to host Cooly Rocks On and the Broadbeach Country Music Festival. These are just two of the events on this month – the coast always has dozens of things to do and see while you are here. And there is no better place to stay than in the heart of Burleigh. Burleigh Heads is on of the best spots on the Gold Coast. With beautiful beaches, funky cafés and restaurants and its own national park. For a truly spectacular view, why not walk the Mt Tamborine Skywalk. It’ll take you around 45 mins for this easy walk featuring 300 meters of steel bridges through the highest parts of the canopy, a 40 metre lookout that soars a breathtaking 30 metres above the creek and forest. The walk is 1.5kms and also features sections along the forest floor – it’s a fairly easy stroll through the forest so will suit most fitness levels.

There are dozens of lookouts along the mountain range, some simply require a short stroll, others are a more intense – both kinds offer a diverse range of scenery from waterfalls to caves, rainforest foliage to the more quintessential Australian forest.

Why not go for a stroll through Mt. Tamborine, eat some freshly made fudge, and wander through quirky shops and cafes. When you’re done go for a walk through the rainforest. There are so many different tracks to walk, you can have a lazy stroll to a look out, or enjoy a full hike. There is something to suit everyone.

 

Glow Worms
While you’re up in the mountains why not check out the Glow Worms? There are two options, you can view them in their natural habitat at Natural Bridge – you’ll want to bring a torch and sturdy shoes as it gets very dark and there are plenty of stairs. You’ll need to visit at night and there are tours that can take you.

Alternatively, you can check out the Glow Worm Caves at Mt. Tamborine – although they are housed – this is the easiest way to see them, and you can visit during the day. For an added bonus you can find them here all year round – unlike at Natural Bridge where they are only visible during certain seasons.

If you’re a surfing fan mark your diary for 9th-20th of March for the Quicksilver & Roxy Pro. This is an event not to be missed as the world’s best male and female surfers compete for the title. Held at the iconic Snapper Rocks in Coolangatta, you’ll love the atmosphere and watching the competition from the shore. You may even be lucky enough to meet your surfing idol. What happened in October
If you were lucky enough to be on the Gold Coast this month hopefully you were able to check out some of the events that were on. There were the V8 Supercars for the GC600, Opera in the Park, the Coolangatta Gold, Buskers by the Creek and many more events.

 

There is always something happening while you’re on the Gold Coast, and Burleigh Heads is the place to stay. There is so much to do in Burleigh Heads, from walking around the headland, to relaxing on the beach or checking out the dozens of restaurants and cafes. If you’ve never been, you definitely need to add the Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre to your ‘must visit’ list. You’ll learn about the Aboriginal history and culture specific to the Gold Coast, you’ll hear dreamtime stories from the area as well as learn about traditional bush foods, and life in the bush. There are also cultural workshops, dance performances, and daily tours.

You can also watch Aboriginal artists at work, purchase original artwork and see a range of artefacts. If you haven’t seen it already, there is nothing quite like watching the sunset from Burleigh Hill. A popular spot with locals, so be sure to get their mid afternoon to stake out a spot. Bring a picnic blanket and some snacks and enjoy a Gold Coast sunset, you’ll see the sun set over the ocean, skyline and mountains – it’s a wonderful sight to see.

If you don’t feel like packing your own picnic, pop down to one of the many fish and chips shops and enjoy your meal overlooking the ocean. They’ve become so popular they’ve opened a second store in Surfers Paradise. But be sure to check out where they started in the heart of Burleigh, and enjoy a delicious hearty meal.
