It was originally observed by white settlers in 1770 when Sir Joseph Banks witnessed some Aboriginal activity on the headland while onboard the Endeavour. While the original inhabitants have called Burleigh home for at least 5,000 years as a tribe known as the Gombemberri Tribe or ‘The Salt Water People’. The headland was named Burly Head by surveyor J. R. Warner in 1840 because of the headlands large appearance and was later renamed Burleigh. For the local Aborigines Big Burleigh was Jellurgul and Little Burleigh was called Jebbribillum.
